Moles are the result of a benign overgrowth of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin in the skin.
They may be present at birth (congenital) or develop later in life. In general, moles can appear at any age and in all genders.
Most moles are harmless, but any sudden or significant changes in size, color, or shape should be evaluated by a doctor to rule out skin conditions such as melanoma or skin cancer.
