Botox: What Is It?
Every day, the emotions we experience—sadness, joy, anger, surprise, and more—are expressed through our faces. Over time, these expressions, combined with the natural aging process, can alter the texture and appearance of the skin, leading to wrinkles and fine lines.
Botox is a well-known treatment in Aesthetic Medicine used to effectively combat aging, expression lines, and various other concerns.
It contains the active substance botulinum toxin, a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When applied, this substance restores skin radiance and elasticity.
Which Areas Can Be Treated with Botox?
Facial Botox can be applied to various areas, such as:
- Glabellar lines (frown lines): Reduces lines between the eyebrows, giving the forehead a more radiant look.
- Eyes: Applied around the eyes (crow’s feet), smoothing wrinkles and fine lines, and helping to reduce dark circles.
- Nose: The area around the nose is frequently affected by expressions, leading to the formation of fine lines.
- Lips: Wrinkles around the lips may be caused by facial expressions or smoking-related puckering.
- Neck & Décolletage: These areas show signs of aging more prominently; Botox helps smooth lines and restore youthfulness.
How Is Botox Administered?
Before treatment, your doctor will examine your skin to determine your needs and the appropriate dosage.
During the procedure, the doctor injects small amounts of the substance into targeted areas. This relaxes the muscles and temporarily limits their movement, which stops new wrinkles from forming.
The treatment uses an extremely fine needle and typically doesn’t require anesthesia, as it is largely painless. On average, it lasts about 15–20 minutes depending on the area and extent of the concern.
