Sebaceous Cyst

Sebaceous Cyst: What Is It and How Does It Develop?

A sebaceous cyst is a small, benign lump that appears beneath the surface of the skin. It contains sebum (the skin’s natural oil), which becomes trapped instead of being released onto the skin’s surface.

While sebaceous cysts are usually harmless and may remain stable over time, they can grow, rupture, or become inflamed. The exact cause of their development remains unclear.

Although typically non-cancerous, sebaceous cysts may evolve into abscesses if left untreated. Surgical removal is strongly recommended as the most effective solution to avoid recurrence or complications.

The procedure is minor, performed under local anesthesia by a qualified specialist.

What Are the Characteristics of a Sebaceous Cyst?

Sebaceous cysts are slow-growing and usually painless, forming a dome-shaped bump that may contain a thick, oily substance. Key characteristics include:

  • Most commonly appear on the face, back, or other parts of the body (except the palms and soles)
  • Small in size and often harmless
  • Smooth and slightly raised to the touch
  • Non-infectious unless inflamed or ruptured

There are hundreds of types of cysts depending on the tissue of origin, but sebaceous cysts are among the most common.

Are They Dangerous?

In most cases, sebaceous cysts are harmless. However, if they change in size, color, or cause pain, they should be evaluated by a medical specialist. Regular monitoring is essential to detect any concerning developments early.

Can a Sebaceous Cyst Become Infected?

Yes. A sebaceous cyst may become infected if bacteria enter through the small opening (duct) that connects it to the skin surface. Infection symptoms may include:

  • Redness and swelling
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Warmth in the area

If left untreated, infection may lead to abscess formation, which requires immediate medical attention and likely surgical drainage.

Can It Be Cancerous?

Although extremely rare, in cases where the cyst shows unusual features (rapid growth, irregular shape, color changes), a malignancy cannot be ruled out. In such cases, a biopsy may be necessary to ensure accurate diagnosis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of a sebaceous cyst is typically clinical. An experienced physician evaluates:

  • Size
  • Color
  • Location
  • Consistency

If the appearance is suspicious, further diagnostic tools such as biopsy may be recommended to rule out malignancy.

Treatment: Removal and Recovery

The only effective treatment for a sebaceous cyst is surgical removal. There is currently no medication that can eliminate it.

  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • A small incision is made to remove the cyst and its capsule completely
  • This minimizes the risk of recurrence
  • The procedure takes 10 to 30 minutes
  • Return to daily activities is typically immediate
  • Post-operative care includes simple instructions for optimal healing
