Lipoma Removal

Lipoma Removal: What Is It?

A lipoma is a benign tumor composed of adipose (fat) tissue and is the most common type of soft tissue tumor. Clinically, it appears as a soft, movable, and smooth lump beneath the skin.

Lipomas can develop at any age and may appear in various parts of the body, ranging in size from very small to quite large.

Although lipomas are generally harmless, removal may be necessary if:

  • They cause discomfort due to their size or pressure on nearby tissues
  • There are aesthetic concerns
  • There’s suspicion of rapid growth or potential malignancy

The procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon under local anesthesia, with complete removal of the lipoma and its capsule to prevent recurrence.

The surgical site is then aesthetically reconstructed to ensure minimal scarring and the best cosmetic outcome.

All removed lipomas are sent for biopsy, to confirm their benign nature.

What Are the Symptoms of a Lipoma?

Lipomas often cause no symptoms and are discovered incidentally. However, depending on their size and location, the following signs may occur:

  • Visible lump under the skin, usually soft and mobile
  • Feeling of pressure, especially when lying down (e.g., neck or back lipomas)
  • Mild pain, but only if the lipoma compresses nearby nerves or blood vessels

Common Areas Where Lipomas Appear

Lipomas can occur almost anywhere on the body. Common locations include:

  • Neck and nape
  • Head
  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Back

How Is a Lipoma Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is made through a clinical examination by a trained surgeon. A lipoma typically feels soft, well-defined, and non-tender. If the lipoma shows rapid growth or has irregular characteristics, further tests may be needed, including:

  • Ultrasound
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • Biopsy, if malignancy is suspected

What Is the Appropriate Treatment?

Treatment is surgical excision.

In cases where the lipoma is small and asymptomatic, monitoring may be sufficient.

However, removal is recommended when:

  • The lipoma causes discomfort or aesthetic concern
  • There’s uncertainty about its nature
  • There’s risk of malignancy

Benefits of Surgical Lipoma Removal

  • Quick and minimally invasive procedure
  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • No hospitalization required
  • Usually painless
  • No need for post-operative painkillers in most cases
  • Excellent cosmetic results, especially when performed by a plastic surgeon
