Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty: What Is It?

Over time, factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can make it increasingly difficult for women to maintain a flat, well-contoured abdomen.

The demands of everyday life often leave little time for consistent exercise and a balanced diet. While these habits certainly support a healthy body, in many cases they may not be enough to fully restore abdominal firmness.

This is where abdominoplasty comes in.

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal wall. By removing this tissue, the skin’s elasticity improves, the abdomen becomes flatter, and stretch marks, often caused by pregnancy, may also be reduced.

Tummy Tuck Incision

The incision is placed strategically low on the abdomen, so that it remains hidden beneath underwear or swimwear.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Although many people think tummy tucks are only for women, the procedure can benefit both women and men.

Ideal candidates include:

  • Women with abdominal skin laxity after pregnancy
  • Individuals with persistent abdominal fat and loose skin, despite diet and exercise
  • People who have lost significant weight and are left with loose or sagging abdominal skin
  • Those with stretch marks or scars from previous surgeries

Keep in mind: Abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure, but it is highly effective for improving skin tone and body contour.

Candidates should be in good general health, have realistic expectations, and be committed to maintaining their results long-term. Major weight changes in the future could affect the surgical outcome.

Why Consider a Tummy Tuck?

There are several personal and medical reasons someone may choose to undergo this procedure:

  • Improved appearance: A tummy tuck significantly improves the shape of the abdominal area and overall body contour. This often leads to a boost in self-confidence.
  • Reduction of localized fat: The surgery helps reduce stubborn fat that is resistant to exercise and diet.

Health improvement: In some cases, excess abdominal fat may negatively impact overall health. Removing it can enhance physical well-being and comfort.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

The abdominoplasty procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon and may vary slightly depending on the type of surgery—either a full abdominoplasty or a mini abdominoplasty.

In all cases, the doctor will have already carried out the necessary examinations and assessments, discussing with you the desired results.

Before the surgery begins, the doctor marks the incision areas. These incisions start from the abdominal area and extend to the sides, in positions that can be covered by underwear or a swimsuit.

During the procedure, general anesthesia is administered.

The surgeon removes excess fat and skin in the area, then closes the incisions with absorbable or non-absorbable sutures.

Full (Classic) Tummy Tuck

Indicated for severe skin laxity and muscle separation across the entire abdominal wall.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A less invasive version that removes excess skin and fat below the navel, ideal for patients with mild laxity in the lower abdomen.

Belt (Circumferential) Abdominoplasty

Suitable for massive weight loss patients (e.g. after bariatric surgery), with excess skin both on the front and back of the body.

Recovery and Healing

After the procedure, it is extremely important to follow the doctor’s instructions to ensure a smooth and quick recovery without complications.

Most patients are discharged the following day, depending on the type and complexity of the abdominoplasty.

They can also return to work, but for the first few weeks, activity should be limited—avoiding intense exercise, heavy lifting, and other strenuous physical activities.

Patients will also need to wear a special compression garment for at least one month.

Full recovery from abdominoplasty takes time, as do the final results. It’s important to have realistic expectations regarding the recovery period and the overall improvement.

Does Abdominoplasty Hurt?

Post-operative pain is generally tolerable and can be managed with mild painkillers.

At KM Plastic Surgery Clinic, we use the most advanced techniques and specialized tools to minimize tissue trauma, significantly reducing pain.
