Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at removing under-eye bags and excess skin from the upper eyelids.
It significantly enhances appearance by eliminating the tired and dull look, while also boosting your self-confidence.
In many cases, it also helps improve vision in older individuals, as sagging eyelid skin can obstruct sight and interfere with daily life.
For this reason, blepharoplasty is a very common choice among patients facing these issues. Let’s take a look at some important things you should know before undergoing the procedure.
Are You a Suitable Candidate?
Candidates for blepharoplasty are generally healthy individuals over the age of 35. However, younger patients with a hereditary predisposition to droopy eyelids can also undergo the procedure, provided their overall health condition allows it.
Results and Duration
The outcome and longevity of the results depend on the patient’s general health, skin condition, age, and of course, daily habits and lifestyle.

What Is the Procedure Like and How Long Does It Take?
Blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia or sedation. If combined with another surgical procedure, general anesthesia may be required.
The plastic surgeon removes the excess fat and then reshapes and tightens the areas with sagging skin. The incisions are closed with very fine sutures.
These sutures are typically removed 5 to 7 days after surgery.
Keep in mind that prior to the operation, your plastic surgeon will examine and assess your case, discuss your desired results, and provide you with any additional information you may need.
A preoperative check-up is also required to ensure there are no underlying medical conditions that could affect the surgery.
Blepharoplasty and Recovery
After the surgery, the patient is free to go home but should have someone stay with them on the first night. The eyelids will still have sutures, which will be removed after about a week. Swelling and bruising are common and usually subside within one to two weeks.
Some general post-operative guidelines include:
- Avoid intense physical activity
- Avoid strong sunlight and wear sunglasses when possible
- Avoid dry environments and activities that may cause eye dryness
- Avoid swimming in the sea or pool
- Do not drive for at least two hours after the procedure
- Avoid makeup for at least six days or until sutures are removed
